Depression: How to Support a Family Member or Friend

Depression: How to Support a Family Member or Friend

When a loved one is struggling with depression, you may feel frustrated and unsure of what to do. Depression is an isolating disorder that can take a toll on an individual, no matter how well-adjusted or tough they may seem. As a trusted provider of behavioral health services in New York we at Pearl Behavioral Health will share tips on how you can provide support:

  • Become more informed about depression
A great first step to providing support is by becoming more well-informed about depression. Learn about what the disorder entails and rule out any misconceptions you may have about it. This will help you better understand what your loved one is going through.
  • Listen to their thoughts and take their feelings seriously
When your friend or relative feels like talking, listen to their thoughts and acknowledge why they may be feeling a certain way. Instead of providing advice, consider asking questions like, “How can I help?”. Validate their feelings by listening and saying things like, “That sounds really tough” or “I’m always here if you need to talk.” Even the smallest of gestures can make a huge difference.
  • Exercise patience and understanding
Patience and understanding is a pivotal part of expressing your support. Exercising patience can give a depressed individual hope, especially at a time when hope is difficult to come by. Although it may seem hard to do so, patience and understanding can go a long way towards improving their mental health.
  • Inform them about support services
In addition to seeing a professional, consider informing your loved one about telemental health services in New Jersey as well. They may seem hesitant at first but encouraging them to get treatment may help towards their recovery.
